Puppy Penny had a bad day.  A really bad day.

First, my mom (a vet tech) brought her into the animal hospital to have her rabies shot, which generally leaves the recipient feeling rather punky the rest of the day.  And she was terrified the whole time.  Strangers scare her, and so do other dogs.  Obviously, there were plenty of both there.

Then, she cut her paw so badly that my mom had to rush her in to the hospital, because she was bleeding so much and her color was so poor that my mother was actually worried for her life.  And my mom should know, she's been a veterinarian technician for a hell of a long time.

Apparently, whatever she cut herself on was so sharp that she sliced through two tendons.  She had to be put under anesthesia a sutured up.  If the tendons don't repair well, she may never walk correctly again.  She'll still be able to move fine, but she may have a limp or stiffness or something.

This was a major surgery, and even with my mom's discount at the hospital, it will cost us a giant pile of money that we definitely don't have right now.  Because of this, we won't be able to spay Penny for a while, both because of the finances and because she'll need to be in a splint for six weeks.  Did I mention that the splint can't get wet?  It's winter.  And Penny's six months old.  Have you ever tried to keep something on a six-month old puppy that she didn't want to be there?  Let alone for six weeks.

Right now, she's sleeping, tired out from the anesthesia and the blood loss.  She lost A LOT of blood.  It's all over the yard and the house.  She even got it on the sofa.  I just finished cleaning up the floor.  I may puke.

All in all, not the best day.  But at least she's alive.  Thank God (or whoever) for that.

Thanks for the vibes. My poor baby, I wish I could be with her right now but I had to go to school. :(

our puppy is also 6 months old! and she was just spayed about 3 weeks ago. No way we needed more dogs!

heck, why didn't they spay her while they had her out? I hope Penny gets to feeling better, and gets the use of her leg back. you take it easy too!

yep, that was Bertha. She's bigger than that now - about 40lbs. She's got the longest legs I've ever seen on a dog, except for her mom and that's who she got them from. We found her mom about 2 weeks before she delivered 4 pups. Someone turned her loose, or she got out and got knocked up. Either way, no one claimed her when we put ads in the paper and at the post office. we live in a very small town, about 250 people. Someone should have known her. Anyway, we kept mom and one of the pups. Dad my have been a pit bull, as the only boy born looks a lot like one. all the girls look like mom, who we think is mostly bird dog. the above icon is Charlene, the mom. our youngest grandson named her after himself, Charlie.

adorable! you know, people can be such jerks. (not a surprise, I know.) But to dump a pregnant dog? Jeez. I'm so glad you guys were there to take her in! Such a sweet story. And it's so cute that your grandson named the dog after himself!

I hope so too! And I *really* hope that these six weeks go by quickly. Puppies! They always manage to get into trouble, don't they?

Oh, no! I'd be so upset if Sasha got hurt like that. We'll both be sending good thoughts for a quick recovery for Penny. She'll probably get used to her splint and forget its there (hopefully). Good luck to both of you.

Thanks for the thoughts! And she's already started to chew on it. Ugh. So we're gonna have to try some Bitter Apple, which makes it taste nasty, and if that doesn't work, she'll end up with a cone around her neck! :( (But if that happens, trust me, there'll be many pictures.*g*)

Awww, poor Penny! What a horrible day for her, you and your Mom. I hope Penny feels better soon. Good luck keeping her splint dry though. :o\

Thanks! We've got a MediPaw thingy that covers it up when she goes out, and it's working well so far. Here's to hoping it lasts all six weeks!

Ack! Poor baby!! Sorry for the late comment, but I do hope Penny's getting stir-crazy already. That's generally a good sign.

Hey, late love is better than no love, right? And yes, she's doing better in the craziness department. But the poor thing can't find a comfortable position to sleep in at night! And consequently keeps me up because she shares my bed.
Thanks!

Poor Puppy Penny! I hope she heals fast and well. But you may wind up puttng the Elizabethan collar on. She'll object at first, but I think she'll get used to it. Of course you know all that already! Sending lotds of hugs and good thoughts to you and Puppy Penny baby!

Thanks for the good wishes! And, yeah, I think we're gonna end up having to put one on her. *cries and whines* she's gonna be such a pain... *whimper* Not that she isn't already. But I'm just glad that she's well enough to *be* a pain.
